Description
Era 40mm High Security Nightlatch BS3621 Chrome (1830-37)
We all know that feeling of leaving the house and wondering if everything is truly secure. Your front door is the first line of defence between your family and the outside world, yet so many homes still rely on outdated locks that simply do not offer the protection required by modern insurance standards. If you are looking to upgrade your security, the Era 40mm High Security Nightlatch BS3621 Chrome (1830-37) is a fantastic choice that balances robust performance with a sleek, professional finish.
This nightlatch is designed to solve the common issue of insecure entryways. Whether you are replacing a worn out lock or upgrading for peace of mind, this unit provides a level of strength that deters intruders and keeps your property safe. It is specifically engineered to meet the rigorous demands of British Standard 3621, meaning it has been put through its paces to ensure it stands up to physical attack. When you choose this lock, you are not just buying a piece of hardware, you are investing in the safety of your home.
Why choose this high security nightlatch for your home
One of the most important things to consider when choosing a lock is whether it meets the standards set by your home insurance provider. Many policies now require a lock that meets the BS3621 standard. This particular model does exactly that. By fitting this lock, you are demonstrating to your insurer that you take the security of your property seriously, which can often help keep your premiums manageable.
Beyond insurance compliance, this lock is built to be incredibly user friendly. It features an ergonomic internal handle that feels natural to operate. You do not need to struggle with stiff mechanisms or complicated sequences. A simple, smooth turn is all it takes to secure your door for the night. The polished chrome finish is another highlight, offering a clean and modern look that complements most door styles, from traditional wooden entrances to more contemporary designs.
Advanced security features for maximum protection
The engineering behind this lock is focused on preventing the most common methods of forced entry. Intruders often look for weak points, such as the ability to slip a bolt or drill through a cylinder. This lock eliminates those vulnerabilities through smart design choices.
- The automatic deadlocking mechanism ensures that as soon as your door clicks shut, the bolt is locked firmly in place.
- This design effectively prevents the common technique where a credit card or similar tool is used to shim the bolt back into the door frame.
- You will find an integral cylinder pull included in the design, which provides a vital layer of protection against drill attacks on the keyhole.
- The lock includes a 20mm bolt throw, providing a deep and secure engagement that holds your door firmly against the frame.
- With over 30,000 unique key variations, the risk of a random key working in your lock is virtually non-existent.
- The internal handle can be locked with a key from the inside, which provides an extra layer of security against someone breaking a glass panel and reaching in to turn the handle.
Versatility for your door requirements
Finding a lock that fits your existing door setup can sometimes be a challenge, but this model is designed with versatility in mind. The 40mm backset is a standard size for many front doors, making it an ideal replacement for older nightlatches that might be coming to the end of their lifespan. It is particularly well suited for doors that have glass panels.
If you have a glass panel near your door handle, you might be concerned about someone breaking the glass to reach inside. This lock addresses that concern perfectly. Because the internal handle can be deadlocked by an anti-clockwise turn of the key from the inside, an intruder would not be able to simply turn the handle and walk in. This added layer of security gives you complete control over who can exit or enter, even if the glass is compromised.
Practical operation for everyday life
We believe that high security should not mean high effort. The Era 40mm High Security Nightlatch BS3621 Chrome (1830-37) is designed for the reality of daily life. The automatic deadlocking means you do not have to remember to lock the door every single time you step out for a moment. It happens automatically. When you return home, a simple key turn from the outside allows you to enter, while the internal lever makes leaving the house just as quick.
For those times when you are moving furniture or just popping in and out of the house, there is a convenient snib function. This allows you to hold the latch in the withdrawn position so the door does not lock every time it closes. It is a small feature, but one that makes a world of difference when you are busy. Just remember to release the snib when you want the security features to engage again.

The polished chrome finish is not only attractive but also durable. It is resistant to the daily wear and tear that front door furniture is subjected to. Whether you live in a coastal area or a busy city centre, this finish is designed to maintain its appearance and resist corrosion over time. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth is all that is needed to keep it looking as good as the day it was installed.
Installation and support
Installing a new lock is a job that many DIY enthusiasts feel comfortable with, but it is essential to have the right tools and a clear understanding of your door construction. If you are replacing an existing nightlatch, you will likely find that the installation is straightforward, as the 40mm backset is a common size for traditional wooden doors. Always ensure that the strike plate is fitted securely to the frame, as the strength of the lock is only as good as the strength of the frame it is attached to.
If you are ever in doubt about the installation process or if you are unsure if this specific model will fit your current door, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our friendly team here at Doorfit. We have years of experience in the industry and we are always happy to provide advice or answer any technical questions you might have.
