    FAQ's

A fire door generally refers to the door leaf itself, whereas a fire doorset is a complete, fully certified assembly. When buying just a leaf, it must be carefully matched on-site with a compatible frame, specific ironmongery, and correct intumescent strips, a process vulnerable to installation errors that can invalidate fire ratings.  This is why many businesses opt for fire doorsets, which are custom-manufactured and supplied as a single unit, with the door leaf pre-hung in its matching frame, complete with pre-fitted hinges, certified locks, and integrated seals. Every single component in a fire doorset has been fire-tested together, providing absolute assurance of legal compliance and vastly superior performance.
In a standard commercial environment, a premium fire-rated doorset can easily last 50 years or more. This is dependent on them being properly looked after and maintained. Components like heavy-duty closers, hinges, and intumescent seals endure massive wear and tear in high-traffic areas and therefore must be subjected to a proactive servicing schedule that ensures that every aspect of the door remains fully compliant.
Measuring for a structural fire doorset installation is significantly more complex than measuring for a standard door leaf. It requires precise calculation of the structural opening (unlined structural opening size), floor finishes, tolerances for perimeter fire-stopping, and wall thickness to ensure total structural compatibility. Even a discrepancy of a few millimetres can compromise the fire performance and void the third-party certification. To eliminate risk, measuring should always be executed by a qualified professional. At Doorfit, we utilise our own highly experienced in-house survey team to handle this for you, guaranteeing a flawless, compliant fit on-site.
Using third-party-accredited fire door installers (such as those certified under FIRAS or BM TRADA Q-Mark schemes) is your primary legal defence under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Accreditation proves that the installers have been independently audited. possess the required technical competency and that every fire door installation they perform is fully documented, compliant, and backed by a certified paper trail.
Fire doors are active components of a building’s passive fire safety strategy. Fire door compartmentation ensures that a fire is contained within a specific zone (compartment) to allow occupant evacuation and safe access for emergency services. If a fire-rated doorset is installed without compliant perimeter fire-stopping between the frame and the wall, fire and toxic smoke will bypass the door entirely. Our accredited installers ensure that the boundary between the doorset and the structural wall is fully sealed with certified fire-stopping materials to maintain total compartmentation integrity at all times.
Yes. All of our fire doorsets are fully compliant with current UK legislation, including the Fire Safety Act, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations, and the Building Safety Act. We also provide full digital traceability for every installation, which supports your building's "Golden Thread" of information and provides you with the defensible, auditable proof of compliance required by the Building Safety Regulator.
We supply and install fire-rated doorsets in FD30 (30 minutes), FD60 (60 minutes), FD90 (90 minutes), and FD120 (120 minutes) configurations. The correct rating is determined by your building’s specific fire strategy and risk assessment. Generally, FD30 doorsets are standard for internal fire doors in office corridors and flat entrance doors, while FD60 and higher are typically specified for high-risk areas, lift lobbies, and plant rooms.
Yes. We have installed fire doorsets in many live, high-traffic environments such as supermarkets, care homes, and medical settings.  We work closely with estate managers to implement strict dust-control measures, noise mitigation, and phased scheduling (including out-of-hours working) to ensure absolute safety and minimal disruption to your daily operations.
Under the Fire Safety (England) Regulations, flat entrance doors in residential buildings over 11 metres must be inspected at least every 12 months, and fire doors in common parts must be checked every 3 months. For commercial fire doors, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order requires a risk-based inspection regime, typically every 6 months for standard traffic areas and more frequently in high-volume public environments such as schools or healthcare facilities.
