Fire Door Safety | Ensure Your Fire Doors Are Compliant | Doorfit

HOW CAN I ENSURE FIRE DOOR SAFETY IN MY BUILDING?

If you’re responsible for managing fire safety precautions in a building or workplace, it’s crucial to ensure that every fire door on the premises adheres to strict fire door regulations. To remain compliant, you should consider the following things.

Is the FIRE door certified?

There’s a label on the door leaf, so I’m covered, right?”. Not necessarily. A certification label on the door will confirm one of two scenarios:

The label covers the complete assembly.

If the door came as part of a door set, the certification label will cover the complete fire door assembly and confirm the compliance of the full set, be it FD30, FD60, or FD120. It may also have an identification plug, and the door frame will be labelled as “approved to match the door”.

The label only covers the door leaf.

The certification label only covers the door leaf if the door was not purchased as part of a doorset. Every other component of the assembly, including the frame, hinges, closing devices, handles, locks, seals, vision panels, and signage, must be certified individually.

ARE YOUR FIRE DOORS FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY?

Ask yourself these questions when inspecting your fire doors:

  • Does the door close fully without sticking if it is opened halfway and released or released from a compliant hold-open device?
  • Are the smoke seals undamaged, with no gaps, and have they been painted over?
  • Are the hinges secure and in good condition?
  • Are the door leaf and frame free from penetrations and damage?
  • Is the glazing secure, undamaged and gap-free?
  • Is the ironmongery secure, in good condition and free from damage?

ARE YOUR FIRE DOORS CORRECTLY INSTALLED?

Once you’ve inspected your fire doors and frames for damage, you must also check that they’ve been correctly installed. Consider the following:

  • Are leaf-to-frame gaps 3mm +/- 1mm?
  • Is the frame securely fixed to the wall?
  • Is there a minimum of three hinges?
  • Is signage clear and appropriate?

The inclusion of fire-rated doors and other fire protection equipment in business and commercial premises in England and Wales is specified in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Installing fire doors in a public building helps limit the spread of fires and allows those in danger to access escape routes safely should a fire occur.
